What is the science behind electrolyzed water? ›

When Force of Nature passes an electrical charge through the salt (NaCl) solution, the sodium separates from the chloride. Chloride is negatively charged and is attracted to the positive side of the electrical charge where it bonds with oxygen and hydrogen from the water.

Electrolysis of an aqueous solution of table salt (NaCl, or sodium choride) produces aqueous sodium hydroxide and chlorine, although usually only in minute amounts. NaCl (aq) can be reliably electrolysed to produce hydrogen.

The Chemistry. Force of Nature uses a technology called electrolyzed water, which is a technology used in industrial applications including wound healing, produce preservation, eye care, veterinary care, organic crop production, and also in green cleaning & sanitizing.

How Electrolyzed Water Is Made. Making it is pretty simple chemistry. You start with the right proportions of salt, water and vinegar. A salt molecule is made up of the elements sodium and chloride, and a water molecule is made up of hydrogen and oxygen.

Studies have shown that electrolyzed water is more effective than common chemical disinfectants, such as chlorinated water, in commercial settings. Food producers and medical facilities use it instead of chemical options because it saves money and does not expose staff to chemical irritants.

Is electrolyzed water safe to drink? Electrolyzed water is non-toxic, and safe to animals, humans and the environment. As of 2015 our product, ESOL™ has been approved by the Secretary of State under regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000 for use in public water supplies.

When you put salt in water, the water molecules pull the sodium and chlorine ions apart so they are floating freely, increasing the conductivity. These ions are what carry electricity through the water with an electric current. In short, saltwater (water + sodium chloride) can help to produce electricity.

Vinegar has ions in it that are capable of transferring charge (It is an electrolyte - a solution with ions in it that can transfer a current through it). Pure water does not have ions in it to conduct the charge so the galvanometer needle doesn't move when the metals are dipped into the water.

Electrolysis tips

The electrolyte is the washing soda and water solution in the tank. You only need about 1/3 cup washing soda for each 5 gallons of water or 1 rounded tablespoon of soda per gallon. This is not a case of more is better. Too much soda can increase conductivity to the point it burns out the charger.
