Chapter 2 Solar Panel:
Most simple series connected solar panels divided into three categories:
- 15 to 16 volts usually 30 to 32 solar cells
- 16.5 to 17 volts usually 33 to 34 solar cells
- 17.5 to 21 volts usually 35 to 36 solar cells
15 to 16 volts panels are referred to as self-regulating panels because they dont overcharge batteries, as a results charge regulator is not required for these panels. These panels used where there is limited use of energy like an electric fence and other low power applications.
16.5 to 17 volt panels required for full-fledged power systems in locations that get a lot of sun throughout the day.
The most preferred panels for most solar power systems are 35 to 36 solar cells panel that delivers 17.5 to 21 volts open-circuit voltage. This is also best for very hot climates to offset the power loss due to high temperature.
I usually construct panels of 36 cells for a basic 12-volt lead-acid battery. One of the benefits of creating your own solar panel is you can design the solar panel according to your need and then later you can increase it if you need extra power.

Implication Onto Electricity Bill Management And Energy Investment
There is no silver bullet in electricity or energy demand and bill management, because customers have different specific situations, e.g. different comfort/convenience needs, different electricity tariffs, or different usage patterns. Electricity tariff may have a few elements, such as daily access and metering charge, energy charge or peak demand charge . PV is a promising option for reducing energy charge when electricity price is reasonably high and continuously increasing, such as in Australia and Germany. However, for sites with peak demand charge in place, PV may be less attractive if peak demands mostly occur in the late afternoon to early evening, for example residential communities. Overall, energy investment is largely an economical decision and it is better to make investment decisions based on systematical evaluation of options in operational improvement, energy efficiency, onsite generation and energy storage.
Impact On Electricity Network
With the increasing levels of rooftop photovoltaic systems, the energy flow becomes 2-way. When there is more local generation than consumption, electricity is exported to the grid. However, an electricity network traditionally is not designed to deal with the 2- way energy transfer. Therefore, some technical issues may occur. For example, in Queensland Australia, more than 30% of households used rooftop PV by the end of 2017. The famous Californian 2020 duck curve appeared often for a lot of communities from 2015 onwards. An over-voltage issue may result as the electricity flows from PV households back to the network. There are solutions to manage the over voltage issue, such as regulating PV inverter power factor, new voltage and energy control equipment at the electricity distributor level, re-conducting the electricity wires, demand side management, etc. There are often limitations and costs related to these solutions.
When electric networks are down, such as during the October 2019 California power shutoff, solar panels are often insufficient to fully provide power to a house or other structure, because they are designed to supply power to the grid, not directly to homes.

A Flat Panel Solar Cell
I made a more portable version of the solar cell in a flat panel form.I used the clear plastic top from a plastic CD jewel case as the window, and lots of silicone rubber glue to both attach the pieces together andto insulate them from each other.
The first step is to make a cuprous oxide plate like we did in thefirst solar cell. This time I sanded one corner clean all the waydown to the shiny copper, and soldered an insulated copper wire toit for the negative lead.
The positive plate is a U shaped piece cut from the copper sheeting,a little bit larger than the cuprous oxide plate, with the cutoutportion of the U a little bit smaller than the cuprous oxide plate.Another insulated copper wire is soldered to one corner of the U.
The first step in construction is to glue the U shaped copper plateto the plastic window. Use plenty of silicone glue, so the saltwaterwon’t leak out. Make sure that the solder connection is eithercompletely covered with glue, or is outside of the glue U, as shownin the photo .
The photo below shows the back side of the solar cell at this point in the construction.
The photo below shows the front side of the solar cell at this point in the construction. Notice that thesilicone glue does not completely cover the copper, since some of the coppermust eventually be in contact with the saltwater.

It sounds relatively implausible, I know. I mean, how on earth can you build a solar panel using shiny old plastic disks? Well, this is not a real solar panel, but it makes good use of the CDs reflective surface for creating a solar heating panel. Its a very simple and efficient project that even your kids could finish in a couple of hours.
Materials required for the CD solar panel:
- super glue,
- a couple of dozen CDs ,
- a utility knife,
- a clear plastic drop cloth,
- a few S hooks,
- masking tape.
You probably already have the gear, so lets move it along.
Directions: The first step is to measure the width and the length of your window. Use your utility knife to cut a piece of cardboard using those measurements and adding four inches to the previous window measurements add8 inches extra for the width and 8 inches extra for the length. For example, a 20 inch by 30 inch window will require a cardboard piece of 2 inches by 38 inches.
Next, use the black spray paint on the cardboard piece, and paint one side completely black . Let the paint dry completely and if necessary, add one more paint coating for best results.
In the next step, youll have to form a box from the cardboard piece, by cutting a four inch square from each of its corners, then bending the sides of the cardboard in such a way that the corners meet i.e. making for a box with the black painted side inside. Now you must use the masking tape for taping up the corners.

How Can I Make A Simple Solar Panel At Home With A Cd: Diy Step By Step Guide Of Making Simple Solar Panel With Cd
The traditional solar photovoltaic panel produces electrical power through the photovoltaic process .
In comparison, the solar thermal panel reflects the suns rays to heat a particular object, fluid, or area.
Although they do not convert the suns rays into electricity, they are crucial to the solar platform.
You do not require battery or inverter integration with the solar panels.
The process is less sophisticated than that of a grid-connected system. The technology is not any less valuable than that of the photovoltaic generation as well.

Planning The Panel Wiring
Every solar cell has a positive and negative lead . They are marked with + for positive lead and – for negative lead. The face of the solar cell is the negative side, and the back is the positive side.
Solar cells are usually connected in strings. In the example given below, each string consists of four cells, and the panel consists of five strings of cells connected together.
Cells can be connected in two ways:
See the picture below for the difference between series and parallel connection.
Cells Connected In Series a string of four .5 volt 2 amp cells connected in series will have the output of 2.0 volts, and 2 amps at the end leads. To connect cells in a series, connect the string from the back of one cell to the face of the next cell, and so on.
Cells Connected In Parallel The same four cells when connected in the parallel can produce 8 amps and 0.5 volts. To connect cells in parallel, join the faces together. In order words, the positive side connect to the positive side of the next cell, and the negative side connect to the negative side of the next cell.
Attach The Copper Wire
Gluing the copper wire to the shiny backside of the CD, so the CD will no longer be functional. There are several ways this can be done, but a popular method is by bending the copper wire into separate curved sections.
To start, you can glue the very end of the copper wire near the center hole of the CD. Next, youll want to extend the copper wire up to the edge of the disc, form a hairpin bend, then bring it back to the center hole.
Repeat this process as you go in a circle around the CD, gluing the wire as needed. After every 3 or 4 bends, youll want to cut the wire near the center hole and start a new section. In the end, the wire should slightly resemble petals around a flower.
When making a solar panel from a CD, you can experiment with different types of wire placement to see what works best, as there are several alternative designs.

Testing Your Solar Panel
Now that you have used the free solar panel plans above to build a solar panel – you need to test it’s power readings to make sure it’s producing the right amount of watts, volts and amps.
If you make solar panels using the same size solar cells we used here, then the solar panel you just built should be producing about 18 volts and 3.5 amps in optimal sunlight.
Whenever you have these two values you can figure out the wattage by multiplying these two values together.
Volts x Amps = Watts
So… 18 Volts x 3.5 Amps = 63 Watts
In the following pages you are going to learn how you can join many of these 63 watt solar panels together and produce as much solar power as you want to, one step at a time.
Prepare The Tab Ribbon:
The two areas of the tab ribbon that will connect to the solar cells will be tinned to prepare for soldering. Since the cell is 4 that is why 4 inch tinning will be applied on the each end of the tab ribbon but on the opposite side.
For reference see picture below,
Tinning is simply melting solder against the soldering iron tip, and then transferring it to the tab ribbon so that the layer of solder melts and attach to the cell when you run hot soldering iron on the tab ribbon. This will attach tab ribbon to the solar cell.

Before constructing the panel, you need to test each and every cell that you are going to use in your project. If you are working with off-spec, then cells need to be categorized in low, medium, and high output. One low current cells can bring the output level of other high current cells to the low rating.
Although, you dont need to get the exact output from each cell, but they should be a level of what the panel is capable of producing.
For the best results, cells need to be tested in the bright sunlight when the sun reaches above your head. But, you can test the output level of cells at any time of the year. Keep in mind, the output level will vary according to environment and weather.
